Ongoing Programs
National Leprosy Eradication Program – Free Treatment:

With the financial support of German Leprosy Relief Association, we have implemented National Leprosy Eradication Program from 1962 after getting order from Tamil Nadu Government, when the prevalence of Leprosy was 15/1000. After effective implementation of this program the prevalence of Leprosy has come down to the level of 0.3/10,000 and we have achieved the stage of Leprosy Elimination from our project area. At present we are carrying out Prevention of Deformity Program for the disabled Leprosy patients and rehabilitation program to improve their quality of life.

Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program – Free Treatment:

We have implemented Revised National Tuberculosis Control program from 1995 when the prevalence of TB was 20/1000. We implemented the program in co-ordination with the District Tuberculosis Control Program and we introduced Directly Observed Treatment for Tuberculosis and we have achieved 100% cure rate in our control area.

HIV/AIDS awareness and Intervention Program – Free Treatment:

Since 2002 we are conducting HIV/AIDS awareness and Intervention program in our project area in co-ordination with Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (sponsored by Government of Tamil Nadu) and ours is a recognized Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre. We conduct HIV/AIDS awareness Campaigns in our project area, treat OI among HIV positive individuals and refer them for the ART to the District ART centre.

Self Help Groups for Women: (GLRA and Government joint program):

We have started 58 Self Help Groups for women and each group consists of 12 normal individuals and 3 members with disabilities due to Leprosy, TB, HIV and other causes. We started the program with the objective of women attaining economic independence, dignity, equity, social justice and better quality of the life.

General Health Care:

We have a base hospital with facilities for admitting 70 patients and provide health care for complicated diseases, outpatient block and facilities for all investigations. Apart from base hospital activities we have outreach program to provide health care in the remote villages. We treat minor illness in the villages itself and shift the patients with complications to the base hospital for inpatients care.

Maternity Services:

We have a maternity unit with 30 beds to provide care to the pregnant women and newborn babies. We have Operation Theatre facilities to conduct caesarean operation for complicated pregnancy.

We have implemented all the above mentioned programs with the involvement of the community and with the co-operation of the local Government.

Multipurpose Health Workers (Female) Training School:

This school was started in the year 1976 and it has been recognized by the Tamil Nadu Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council. We admit 30 students every year and the course duration is 2 years. The sale of application starts in the last week of May. The written test and interview will be conducted for selection in the 3rd week of July. The course will start in the 1st week of August. Well Wishers Club of SMC:

In order to take our services to the public with their involvement and cooperation, we have started Well Wishers Club of SMC. Whoever is interested to work along with us to achieve the objective of creating healthy community in our project area can join in this club. Annual subscription for each member is Rs.300/- and for patrons Rs.10,000/- (one time payment). They will be given 10% discount in Medicines, 25% concession in Master Health Checkup. We also provide 10% concession in Lab Investigation, E.C.G., X-ray and Ultra Sound Scan. There will be a get together program once in a year for all the members and patrons.

Future Plan

1. Converting into a well equipped medical centre to serve the Rural Community

In the next five years we have planned to develop our institution as one of the well equipped hospital with complete manpower to tackle emergencies round the clock by providing medical, maternity and surgical care. In order to achieve this task we have planned to implement the following developmental activities:

For the common communicable diseases:

  1. Tuberculosis
  2. Acute gastro enteritis
  3. HIV/AIDS
  4. Chicken Box
  5. Community Acquired Pneumonia
  6. Intestinal worms infestation
  7. Leprosy
  8. Skin diseases like scabies and impetigo
  9. Measles, encephalitis and tetanus
  10. Malaria and Viral hepatitis

For the following non-communicable diseases.

  1. Hypertension
  2. Diabetes mellitus
  3. Myocardial infarction
  4. Cancer
  5. Obesity
  6. Endocrine disorders
  7. Malnutrition
  8. Complications associated with Pregnancy and delivery
  9. Road Traffic accidents
  10. Cerebro –vascular accidents.

2. Implementation of old age home

In order to provide comprehensive care to the old people including accommodation, food, clothes, medical care, mental and spiritual health under one roof we are planning to start Home for the Aged in our hospital premises.

3. To start Eye Care and Child Care program in our hospital.
4. Solar Power System for Water Heater and Street Lights.
5. Centralized kitchen with smokeless stoves.
